Muscle is Important

By Vito La Fata

If you were to describe an older person, what word would you use? Most people would use words like frail, weak, and cautious. You know what I mean; even if they are not obviously sick, there is just something about them that seems fragile. They walk more slowly and carefully, and they depend on others to do many things for them, rather than doing those things themselves.

Why? What is it about nearly every elderly person that makes them frail? The answer may surprise you, but it should also encourage you, because you do not have to become frail as you age. It is called sarcopenia, which is just a fancy name for muscle loss.

Beginning around the age of twenty five, most people begin to lose muscle tissue. And the older you get, the faster you lose muscle tissue. Lots of women, when they get to the age of forty or so can lose almost one half pound of muscle yearly!

However, there is something you can do to slow down this process and even cause it to stop. And do not worry if you have already lost muscle for a few years. You can build up the muscle that is left so that you may even become stronger than you have ever been!

It is not a complex process to build up muscle and you can do it in just a little bit of time each week. If you begin weight lifting, you will change the shape of your body and you will cause your body to burn more calories even at rest. This is because muscle burns more calories than fat does. You can burn calories while you watch television!

In order to build muscle mass, it is important to cause your bones and tendons to be stressed. You actually cause little injuries to your muscles. As those little injuries heal, your muscles build up larger and stronger.
