Treating Acne With Chemical Peels

By Marlene Ataine

Almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point, in some it can be mild with just a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often. However acne can be more severe in other teenagers, giving rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, and in more severe cases larger red, inflamed spots called cysts. Severe acne can in some cases leave scarring, and these skin pimples, spots and cysts usually change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. Human skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. Follicles (small canals) connect the glands to the pores. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. Dead skin cells are brought to the surface of the skin by the sebum carrying them through the follicles. From each follicle a small hair grows through the skin. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. When both male and female hormones (estrogen) are imbalanced, it also results in a breakout. During pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, this can happen to women. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. A chemical peel exfoliates your skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. The formation of acne pimples and spots is reduced. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

For acne treatment, chemical peels are a very cost effective option. This acne treatment is also very safe. When applied to the affected areas, superficial chemical skin peels remove the dead skin cells by exfoliating and cleansing the top layers of the skin. A course of six peels, spaced apart by one week minimum, is usually recommended. A reduction in the amount of acne breakouts will be noticeable, and skin texture will improve too.

Make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic for your chemical peel acne treatment. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
