Motivation for Cosmetic Procedures

By Alistair Nole

It's more accepted these days that certain signs of aging, such as wrinkles or a loss of elasticity in the skin, are best treated in consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. To get the results that you want, proper treatment will provide the correct course of action to target excessive skin or a loss of collagen in certain parts of the face. In the past ten years, treatment options have grown dramatically and their popularity continues to explode. What is it that motivates people today to have treatments done?

Certainly, self esteem is at the heart of many people's decision to seek treatments. Some are looking to improve confidence, decrease self-consciousness. For example, one may see their nose as large or conspicuous. If one believes it to be, the perception can create the reality and cause discomfort and anxiety, whether true or not. For some who work very hard to look their best, whether it be through exercise, diet, clothes, makeup, et cetera, an area that they would like to make just a bit better or a problem or flaw that they can improve upon, can be quite important. When this is linked to sexuality, the level of importance goes up a few notches.

A person's sense of improvement in quality of life or work can actually be the end result of a change. This can include things like wearing the type of clothes or bathing suits you want to wear. Or, going to the beach is enjoyable for you, and you want to feel good about your body. Perhaps you deal with the public a lot or have a very public job. These all weigh in the decision.

Closely connected with self esteem, vanity is one of the top motivators. It's only natural to want to regain a lost positive attribute. For example, my lips always had volume but now... , I always had a nice figure but now.... It can be like losing your self-identity when you have had good positive reinforcement over the years and then lose that attribute.

It's also very natural to want to slow down, reverse or turn back the effects of aging that are beginning to appear or have been creeping along for a while. In addition, it's equally normal to want to improve or change a feature that you never liked. This can be an issue of maturity-- you thought about it a lot when you were younger and after years of reflection have realized that it definitely is something you would like improved.

Another motivator is health reasons. The various unpleasant postpartum changes to the body can be depressing for any mom. And correcting post-weight loss body changes can be a real tangible benefit. Also, there could be a need to relieve physical factors or symptoms. One example is how a breast reduction can provide relief from chronic recurrent headaches, lower back pain, neck strain, shoulder notching, numbing or tingling in the hands due to nerve stretch; all problems that come with mammary hypertrophy (excessively large, dense and heavy breasts). Most of these problems are totally fixed by a procedure to reduce breast size.

Another big motivator can be dramatic life changes. People may feel like they are wearing their divorce on their face or that their job, or some other significant life stress has aged them. Whatever the reasons, there are clear, safe and affordable options available for anyone looking to make those changes or small corrections.
