The Importance of Fiber for Your Health

By Vito La Fata

It is a delicate subject, but one so crucial to your health that we should not ignore it. It is about your fiber intake. Are you getting enough? Fiber is the part of a plant that is hard for your body to digest. In fact, there are some kinds of fiber that your body can't digest at all. And that is what makes it so good for you.

After you eat, your body extracts the nutrition from food and then eliminates the rest as waste. This waste also has toxins in it. The more fiber you eat, the faster this waste leaves your body. But if you do not get enough fiber, the waste sits in your digestive tract for longer periods of time.

The more time it takes to eliminate this waste, the more toxins are released into your body. These can make you sick and they can even cause you to get cancer. But if you eat plenty of fiber, you can stay healthy and it can even help you to lose extra pounds!

The good news is that there is an easy fix: eat more fiber. If you are a female, try to eat 25 grams each day. If you are a male, shoot for about 38 grams each day. And remember: fiber only comes from plants. So be sure to eat plenty of veggies, fruits, beans and whole grains.

There are easy ways to get more fiber into your diet. For instance, read the labels on food before you eat it. The grams of fiber are usually listed. Also, eat the skins of fruits and vegetables. The skins usually have a lot of fiber in them.

Also, when you eat breads and other grains, be careful to eat only 100% whole grain products. Unless it says this on the package, you may not be getting whole grain. Grains that have been refined are not as good for you as whole grain.
