Turn That Frown Upside Down

By Dern Heatherton

Botox is the most commonly performed "non-surgical" cosmetic procedure in the world. The price point is very attractive and affordable. The product has been tested and used extensively for years. And the safety record of Botox is exceptional.

The most common cosmetic use for Botox is the treatment of the frown lines between the eyebrows. When you inject the frown muscle with an adequate dose of Botox Cosmetic, it stops moving. As a result, the frown line diminishes. The frown lines disappear because the frown muscle can no longer contract and thus can no longer wrinkle up the overlying skin.

The frown lines between the eyes are the most common area treated with Botox. Botox was actually approved for frown lines in 2002 by the FDA. In addition to the fact that frown lines are a major area of concern for patients is the fact that the market was driven by extremely high levels of satisfaction among patient end users. Botox smooths out the vertical lines between the brows. This gives patients a more refreshed and relaxed appearance. Some patients say it eliminates their "angry" look.

As common sense dictates, you should be in generally good physical health. As well, you need to inform your physician about any drugs you are taking. The medical history should include hormones (oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement) and even aspirin, vitamins, and herbal medications since these substances can interfere with blood clotting or interact with medications used during surgery and could increase surgical risk.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to a patient that they should have stopped using certain medications or even altered behaviour such as smoking. It is up to the patient to take this responsibility for self education seriously.

To achieve optimal results, doctors recommend that patients take the following precautionary measures:

- Before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise, give yourself 24 hours

- For 4-5 hours after the injections, try not to take a nap or lay down

- The treated area or areas should not be massaged

- Be sure to practice daily facial exercises that your doctor recommends

- And be sure wear sun block

You want to let the Botox settle, so it is recommended that in the recovery period, you limit your muscle movements as best as you can.

On average, the effects of Botox injections last anywhere from 3-6 months. Facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear after the time period has passed. Fortunately, the wrinkles will not be as pronounced. Naturally, when this occurs, patients can opt to have their Botox treatment repeated. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
